I'm back at work today, but I was home sick last Thursday through the weekend. Normally I enjoy staying home - even when I'm ill - because I can watch TV and catch up on everything I've missed. I found myself extremely disappointed this weekend while searching for something to watch because it seemed like all the channels were flooded with specials on 9/11.
I don't mean to sound cynical about the events that happened five years ago today. It's just that I have a huge problem with the way those events have been politicized over the past five years - and even moreso over the past two weeks. The Bush Administration and the Republican Party use the attacks at every opportunity for their advancement. They used 9/11 to send out troops to Iraq and they still use it to instill fear in the entire country.
What really made me angry was ABC's airing of "The Path to 9/11". Although they supposedly edited some of the footage here in the U.S., the edits were minimal in other countries where it was still advertised as "The official true story" of 9/11. In reality, the miniseries is nothing more than a platform for the Bush Administration and the upcoming elections.
So I decided that I would remember 9/11 in my own way by using my own memories of what happened that day five years ago.
Then I read today's post over at Joe.My.God and everything fell into place for me. Nothing beats a firsthand account.
Please, go read it.
